I installed gmtp (sudo apt-get install gmtp), connected my phone, switched it to PTP not MTP. Opened gmtp, connected device through there, and it worked.

on the phone, go to settings>storage and then open the menu and select "usb commputer connection".set it to mtp, and try it and then see if setting it to ptp does anything. It seems like it is set...
